چکیده

Abstract. The Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) satellite mission is a joint endeavour developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) Japan Aerospace Exploration (JAXA) features 94 GHz Doppler Cloud Profiling Radar. This paper presents theoretical basis of cloud precipitation microphysics (C-CLD) EarthCARE Level 2 (L2) algorithm. C-CLD algorithm provides best estimates vertical profiles water mass content hydrometeor characteristic size, obtained from radar reflectivity, path-integrated signal attenuation sedimentation velocity using optimal estimation (OE) theory. To obtain forward model relations associated uncertainty, an ensemble-based method used. ensemble consists collection in situ measured drop size distributions that cover natural microphysical variability. mean standard deviation represent their microphysics-based uncertainty. output variables are provided on grid horizontal 1b (L1b) (1 km along track 100 m vertically). OE framework not applied to liquid-only clouds drizzle-free lightly drizzling conditions, where more statistical approach preferred.

Microphysical retrievals from simultaneous polarimetric and profiling radar observations

The character of precipitation detected at the surface is the final product of many microphysical interactions in the cloud above, the combined effects of which may be characterized by the observed drop size distribution (DSD). This necessitates accurate retrieval of the DSD from remote sensing data, especially radar as it offers large areal coverage, high spatial resolution, and rigorous quali...

Cloud radar observations of precipitation

An innovative method for the observation of vertical air motion and raindrop size distribution in precipitation using a 94-GHz Doppler radar is demonstrated in this paper. The method is particularly appealing since it is based on fundamental physics, the scattering of microwave radiation by large particles (Mie scattering). Observations from stratiform rain are presented to illustrate the poten...

Quantification of Cloud Microphysical Parameterization Uncertainty Using Radar Reflectivity

Uncertainty in cloud microphysical parameterization—a leading order contribution to numerical weather prediction error—is estimated using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. An inversion is performed on 10 microphysical parameters using radar reflectivity observations with vertically covarying error as the likelihood constraint. An idealized 1D atmospheric column model with prescribed ...

Radar-Based Retrievals of Cloud Properties in the Arctic and New Results from SHEBA

Clouds play a crucial role in the radiative balance of the earth’s surface, particularly in the Arctic where they participate in various feedback mechanisms with the underlying surface that consists of a complex mixture of snow, sea-ice, and open water. Our current understanding of clouds, and especially their representation in climate models, is limited. Longer term observational studies of th...

Mixed-Phase Cloud Retrievals Using Doppler Radar Spectra

The radar Doppler spectrum contains a wealth of information on cloud microphysical properties. Typically, radar-based cloud retrievals use only the zeroth or first moments of the Doppler spectrum – reflectivity and mean Doppler velocity – to derive quantities such as cloud water content and particle characteristic size (e.g., Liou and Sassen 1994; Matrosov et al. 2002). When using only the mome...
